Recognising the challenges of championing gender equality in what has been previously a more male-dominated industry, our Project Development Manager, Sue Balsdon, shares her thoughts on how gender equality has evolved in the workplace. Looking back on her career, Sue reflects on the challenges women faced, the progress made, and the journey still to come…

Facing Challenges in the Workplace

“The 1990s were a pivotal time for women in the workplace,” says Sue. “I have previously worked for a  leading, long-established UK company within its industry. While women’s contributions were becoming more recognised, the environment was still largely male-dominated.”

During her established career, Sue has seen significant changes in the business world particularly at that time – huge contracts were being won, and new technologies were transforming industries. It was an exciting time, but for a woman wanting to succeed, Sue admits it wasn’t always easy.

“The key was having the right mindset,” Sue continues. “I remained professional whilst navigating at times challenging situations for a female, particularly when dealing with a ‘pack mentality’ that demeaned women. There were attempts made to find weaknesses, and jealousy could be present if women were awarded success. Women felt they had to work harder, covering every detail so they wouldn’t be tripped up.”

“Unfortunately during that era, there would be bullying, discrimination, and sometimes what would now be considered abusive behaviour amongst colleagues, particularly towards women. Sadly, this was accepted as part of the work culture at that time, and could often come from the top.”

Sadly Sue witnessed many women had to either put up with the behaviour or had to leave their roles, as there were no real consequences.

Acknowledging Progress and Ongoing Work

On this International Women’s Day, Renovo are celebrating the progress many businesses and industries have made, whilst still recognising there’s much work to do. Sue is encouraged by the positive changes she’s seen: “Thankfully, today, there’s more encouragement to report such behaviour, and businesses are taking stronger stances on these issues.”

Sue points out how important it is for companies to actively support inclusivity and create safer, more supportive environments for everyone, it is an element she is particularly proud of and feels she experiences from the great team at Renovo.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future

Hoping to inspire like-minded women in male-dominated fields, Sue shares the following advice to women in the workplace: “With persistence and a strong support system, women can break barriers and help shape a more inclusive workplace for future generations… Challenges should be seen as opportunities to grow, not obstacles.”

She encourages women to cultivate confidence and competence, seek out mentors and allies, speak up for themselves, and build strong professional networks. “Addressing bias with professionalism and leading by example will inspire future generations to thrive.” Most importantly, she says, “To the woman aspiring to a career in a male-dominated field: never doubt your worth – believe in your abilities, seize opportunities, and never let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong. Because you do.”

Celebrating Progress, Driving Change: A Commitment to Gender Equality at Renovo

Celebrating the progress made so far, Renovo’s Director, Emma Boreham, shares her thoughts:

“I will be raising a glass on Saturday in celebration of all those who aspire to continue accelerating action around gender equality. I’m so lucky to have been part of businesses that recognise this and will continue to support fair opportunities for everyone.

According to data from the World Economic Forum, at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158 – roughly five generations from now – to reach full gender parity.

While this highlights that we still have a long way to go, for now, I want to celebrate and acknowledge what has been achieved so far. International Women’s Day has been around for over 100 years; let’s all continue working hard to support and recognise everyone’s contributions.”

By continuing to champion inclusivity, address biases, and provide opportunities for growth, Renovo aims to break down barriers and pave the way for future generations.
